Oscar-winner Mark Rylance is to play a golfing folk hero in The Fantastic Flitcrofts, which Cornerstone Films is set to introduce to buyers at the Cannes virtual market next week.

Craig Roberts (Just Jim) will direct a screenplay by Simon Farnaby (Paddington 2) about Maurice Flitcroft, who managed to gain entry to the British Open Golf Championship in 1976 and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process.

Based on a true story, the screenplay is based on book The Phantom Of The Open, written by Scott Murray and Farnaby.

London and LA-based sales agency Cornerstone Films will finance together with Len Blavatnik’s film investment arm AI Film and BBC Films. The film was developed by BBC Films and the BFI (allocating National Lottery funding). Cornerstone will also handle worldwide sales and distribution.

Producers are Nichola Martin through Baby Cow Films, Tom Miller from Water & Power Productions and Kate Glover (Greed). Executive producers are Christine Langan and James Swarbrick.

Rylance, who won the best supporting actor Oscar in 2016 for his performance in Bridge Of Spies, is also known for his screen roles in Dunkirk, The BFG and Wolf Hall.

Other titles that Cornerstone will present at Cannes include Jon Wright’s The Little People and a remake of The Changeling.
