AFI FEST presented by Audi has given world premieres slots to two potential awards season contenders, opening selection On The Basis Of Sex starring Felicity Jones as pioneering attorney and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and closing night entry and historical drama Mary Queen Of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.
Focus Features handles both selections and will release Mary Queen Of Scots on December 7, and On The Basis Of Sex on December 25 to commemorate Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court, and
AFI alumna Mimi Leder directed The Basis Of Sex also stars Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor and Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates. It is a Participant Media film in association with Alibaba Pictures. Daniel Stiepleman wrote the screenplay, and Robert W. Cort and Participant Media’s Jonathan King served as producers.
Josie Rourke Mary Queen Of Scots directed from Beau Willimon’s adapted screenplay based on John Guy’s biography, Queen Of Scots: The True Life Of Mary Stuart, charting the life of Mary Stuart, who reclaims the Scottish throne and asserts her claim to the English throne, occupired by Elizabeth I.
Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Ian Hart, Adrian Lester, James McArdle, David Tennant and Guy Pearce also star. The Closing Night Gala will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre.
AFI FEST 2018 runs place from November 8-15.
