Picturehouse Entertainment has picked up UK rights to Shannon Murphy’s debut feature Babyteeth from Celluloid Dreams. It follows the film’s world premiere in Competition at Venice last month.
Murphy’s film is making its UK premiere in the first feature competition at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, October 6.
The comedy drama stars Eliza Scanlen as a seriously ill teenager who falls in love with small-time drug dealer, played by Toby Wallace, to the horror of her parents. The Babadook star Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn star as her parents.
Wallace, whose previous credits include Rhys Graham’s Galore and Brendan Maher’s Return To Nim’s Island, received the Marcello Mastroianni acting prize at Venice for his Babyteeth performance.
Babyteeth is written by Rita Kalnejais, adapted from her own play of the same name. Alex White produces for Australia’s Whitefalk Films, with Jan Chapman (Jane Campion’s The Piano) as executive producer.
The film was backed by Screen Australia in association with Create NSW, with the support of Jan Chapman Films, WeirAnderson.com, and Spectrum Films.
Picturehouse Entertainment and Celluloid Dreams previously teamed up on Xavier Legrand’s Venice 2017 Silver Lion winner Custody.
Picturehouse presently has Shola Amoo’s The Last Tree on release, with its upcoming slate including Mirrah Foulkes’ Judy And Punch and Johannes Nyholm’s Koko-Di, Koko-Da.
