Rising young Belgian auteur Michaël R. Roskam has signed up to write and direct the pilot for a new Belgian-set but English language series for US powerhouse TV network HBO.

Buda Bridge Bitch, as the project is called, will be executive produced by two Hollywood titans: Michael Mann (Heat) and Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Rain Man.)

The drama, which Roskam is currently working on, unfolds as a mysterious woman is found dead on Buda Bridge, an existing bridge just outside Brussels. Her death leads to a series of violent crimes and mayhem soon then follows in the “dark capital of Europe.”

“All of this is, of course, fantastic news,” Roskam said of his new assignation but was quick to point out that the project is still at an early stage, with several obstacles to overcome. “We are only at the beginning of the production process.”

The writer-director has received the greenlight to script the pilot and to put together a blueprint for a potential series.

Roskam’s 2011 debut feature Bullhead (Rundskop) sold internationally by Celluloid Dreams, helped make an international star of Matthias Schoenaerts. However, there is no word yet as to whether or not Schonaerts - seen earlier this summer in Jacques Audiard’s Rust & Bone - will figure in the new HBO drama.
