Indian actress Nandita Das will direct the modern slavery thriller Trafficking, with the director of I Am Love on board to produce.

Siddharth Kara, a foremost authority on modern slavery and human trafficking, wrote the screenplay and will produce with Luca Guadagnino for Italy’s First Sun Pictures and Elizabeth Stanley of Elizabeth Stanley Pictures.

Traffickingtells the intertwined story of three young women from India, Nigeria and the Ukraine who are forced into slavery and attempt to escape from an Italian brothel.

“We know so little about trafficking and only an accessible film that touches the hearts and the minds of people will do justice to it,“ Das said. “As a film-maker I am excited to take on the challenge of telling this poignant story in the most interesting and engaging manner.“

Das has starred in Fire, Earth, Bawander, BeforeTheRainsand RamchandPakistani, among others, and screened her 2008 feature directorial debut Firaaqat Telluride, Toronto, London, Pusan, Istanbul and Karlovy Vary.

She is represented by Amotz Zakai and Mike Marcus of Echo Lake Productions and by Aude Powell of Brunskill Management in the UK.

Kara is represented by Phyllis Wender of Gersh New York. Guadagnino is represented by Bart Walker of Cinetic Management.
