Essential Entertainment has joined Lion Rock Productions in its remake of John Woo’s The Killer in 3D and will introduce the project at EFM.

Lion Rock’s Woo and Terence Chang will produce the English-language version and Jung Woo-Sung from Reign Of Assassins and The Good, The Bad, The Weird is confirmed to star with more names set to be announced shortly. Essential Entertainment will commence worldwide sales at the EFM.

John H Lee is directing from Josh Campbell’s script set in present day as an elite Asian assassin must partner with the detective who is pursuing him to protect a beautiful singer whom the hitman unintentionally blinded.

“While all my films are special to me, The Killer is truly one of my favourites,” Woo said. “We are thrilled to reinvent it as an English-language film and know it’s in capable hands by the incredible visual style and tender emotion John H Lee brings to all his films.”

“John Woo’s The Killer is one of the most influential and classic action films of all time,” Essential’s sales chief John Fremes said. “The 3D version will no doubt appeal to fans of the original as well as capture a new generation of enthusiasts.”

Howard Frumes of Alexander, Nau, Lawrence, Frumes, & Labowitz brought the project to Essential.

Essential’s sales slate includes Barney’s Version, The Expatriate, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, The Music Never Stopped and Red Dog, which will receive its world premiere in competition in Berlin.
