The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ampas) has elected new governors including Black Panther costumer designer Ruth Elaine Carter, Hidden Figures producer Donna Gigliotti and Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth to its board for 2019-20.

The election has slightly increased diversity among Ampas governors, with the number of women on the board increasing from 22 to 24 and the number of people of colour rising from ten to 11.

Carter will represent the costume designers branch, Gigliotti the executives branch and Roth the writers branch. Other newly elected board members are Ellen Kuras (cinematographers branch), Howard Berger (makeup artists and hairstylists branch) and Jennifer Yuh Nelson (short films and feature animation branch).

Among the ten governors reelected to the Academy board are Laura Dern (actors branch), Steven Spielberg (directors branch), Nancy Utley (marketing and public relations branch) and Mark Johnson (producers branch).

Previously announced new governors-at-large are DeVon Franklin, Rodrigo Garcia and Janet Yang.

The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who can serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.
