Alejandro Brugués’ Juan Of The Dead won the audience award as the 29th annual Miami International Film Festival came to an end at the weekend after nine days and 100 films from 35 countries

Cristián Jiménez’ s Bonsai (Chile-Argentina-Portugal-France) won the Ibero-American and Documentary sponsored by the John S & James L Knight Foundation.

Jiménez splits a $30,000 cash prize with US distributor Strand Releasing, which receives a share on condition that Strand stages a minimum of a one-week commercial theatrical engagement in Miami-Dade County before Mar 11, 2013.  

Bart Layton’s The Imposter (UK, pictured) claimed the Ibero-American Documenary Competition sponsored by the Knight Foundation and receives a $10,000 cash prize.

Outsider Pictures recently acquired US distribution rights to Juan Of The Dead from Mexico-based Latinofusion and the US debut is set for Mar 13.

“This has truly been a memorable festival with enlightening and educational films,” president of Miami Dade College Dr Eduardo J Padrón said. “Congratulations to the winners, Jaie, the entire MIFF and college teams, and all the volunteers who make our beloved festival possible,”

“This year’s films were stronger than ever,” the festival’s executive director Jaie Laplante said. “Congratulations to all the winning filmmakers whose visions unquestionably raised the bar of the art form this year at the Miami International Film Festival.”
