Carlos Carrera’s crime drama Backyard will close the seven-day 14th Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) on August 25, marking the culmination of a programme of 37 features and 36 shorts.

Backyard (pictured) is a fictionalised account of the gruesome series of murders in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, of young women, most of them low-pay labourers who worked for US-owned factories in the hope of a better life. Ana de la Reguera and Jimmy Smits star.

The line-up includes the world premiere of Youssef Delara, Michael D Olmos and Victor Teran’s relationship drama Bedrooms.

Also screening are Gonzalo Arijon’s Eyes Wide Open (Uruguay-France), Sebastian Leilo’s Navidad (Christmas) (Chile-France), and Anna Muylaert’s E Probido Fumar (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes) from Brazil.
