Scott Hicks’ The Boys Are Back has been named as one of the two opening night films at the 32nd Mill Valley Film Festival in San Raphael, California, on October 8.

Based on a true story, the film stars Clive Owen as a wise-cracking sportswriter who is plunged into single parenthood following the death of his wife. It will receive its world premiere at Toronto.

Owen will be honoured at a Mill Valley Film Festival Spotlight event where he will receive the Mill Valley Film Festival Award for his work in cinema.

Festival organisers have also arranged a tribute to Anna Karina, the Paris-based film-maker, actor and darling of the French New Wave who will introduce a screening of Victoria, her first directorial effort in more than 30 years.

Among the Bay Area entries of work by local film-makers or shot in the area are: Niall McKay’s The Bass Player; Ruedi Gerber’s Breath Made Visible; and John Korty’s Miracle In A Box: A Piano Reborn.

The festival is scheduled to run from October 8-18.
