The DVD and video release of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones notched up $75m in its first 24-hour period after going on sale at midnight on Tuesday in parts of North America. Twentieth Century Fox said in a statement that one quarter of initial shipments were purchased from traditional retailers across North America, achieving record figures.

"Our tracking shows that the sales velocity for Episode II is faster than any other major title released this year - and possibly ever," Mike Dunn, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, said. "Right now we've got out-of-stock situations all over the country and we're doing everything possible to keep up with this velocity of sale as we head into the first weekend."

To date more than one million video and DVD copies of the Star Wars franchise have been sold worldwide. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones is still on theatrical release and has grossed just over $305m.
