India’s Yash Raj Films has tapped Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif to star in upcoming romantic thriller Ek Tha Tiger, directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra.

Kabir Khan previously directed edgy terrorism-themed dramas Kabul Express and New York for Yash Raj. Ek Tha Tiger is written by Kabir Khan and Neelesh Misra from a story by Chopra.

Production is scheduled to start in early July for a mid-2012 release. Aseem Mishra, who worked with Kabir Khan on New York, will be the DoP, while the music will be scored by Pritam.

The project marks the first time that Salman Khan has starred in a Yash Raj film although his father, Salim Khan, has starred in several films including Deewar and Kaala Patthar for the studio.

Yash Raj has been ramping up production of late, launching youth-oriented label Y-Films, and also developing a third installment in the Dhoom franchise, to be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and star Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan. Dhoom 3 starts shooting at the end of 2011 for a 2012 Christmas worldwide release.

Yash Raj has also scheduled romantic comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, directed by newcomer Ali Abbas Zafar and starring Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar, for a September 9 worldwide release.
