Russian comedy Hitler Kaput! enjoyed a $6m opening weekend in three territories, and was the highest new entry in this week's Screen International chart. Distributed by Central Partnership, it played across 773 screens in three territories.
The film, directed by Marius Balchunas, stars Sam Arutunian and Andrei Baliakin. Despite a good performance at the box office, the parody about the Nazi occupation of Russia did not come close to Russia's biggest opener The Very Best Film (Samiy Luchshiy Film), which generated a mammoth $16.5m in its opening weekend earlier this year.
French film Let It Rain (Parlez-Moi De La Pluie) entered the chart as the second-highest new entry at number 13, with a $3.2m take across 453 screens in two territories. Not surprisingly, it opened at number one in the Paris area. The comedy, distributed through StudioCanal and directed by Agnes Jaoui, tells the story of a feminist who returns to her family home to help her sister put their deceased mother's affairs in order.
The Weinstein Company's Vicky Cristina Barcelona opened via Warner Brothers in Spain to an estimated $3.2m from 326 sites for a per-screen average of $9,676. Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem star in Woody Allen's rom-com, which had its Spanish premiere at San Sebastian last week.
Elsewhere, action comedy Tropic Thunder saw an increase of 415%, which reflected its opening in six territories including the UK. It reached number two in the international chart and stars Ben Stiller as an action-movie hero who finds himself embroiled in a real-life war situation.
Focus Features' first overseas date for the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading came in Italy via Medusa Film. The dark spy comedy took just over $3m across 401 screens.
The top 40 films generated $119.2m across 39,666 screens for the period of September 19-21.
