IFP has announced that the 20th Gotham Independent Film Awards will take place on November 29, once again at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The organisation, now officially known as Independent Filmmaker Project, also revealed that it has broadened the criteria for consideration in the Awards’ Best Feature category. Independent films that have premiered on digital platforms - such as VOD or pay TV - following festival runs without having played theatrically will now be eligible.

IFP has also created a new prize, the Festival Genius Audience Award. To be eligible, a US film must have won an audience award at a US festival between November 2009 and October 2010. The Festival Genius community - 200,000 film fans worldwide - will vote online for the winner.

“New York is the home of independent film, so it’s exciting that we are celebrating 20 years of the Gotham Independent Film Awards,” said Joana Vicente, executive director of IFP. “This year’s event will bring back all those who were at the forefront of independent cinema and are still thriving today, as well as those who are being welcomed into the fold through their unique vision and daring films.”

Submissions are now being accepted in five of competitive categories, including Best Feature, Best Documentary, Breakthrough Actor, Breakthrough Director and Best Ensemble Performance.
Deadline for submissions is 5pm EST on Sept 17 and nominees will be announced on October 18. Details at http://gotham.ifp.org.
