The Cannes Film Market which opens on May 13 and closes on May 22 this year has thus far shown a strong increase in registration. Attendees are set to number at least 5% more than in 2009 with increases across all territories. One notable hike comes from Latin America whose registrations are up 12%. First-time attendees include such territories as Qatar, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Mozambique and the Dominican Republic. Buyer registrations are also up 5% over 2009.

Screenings are also on the rise with almost half of those scheduled to be show digitally and about 65 in 3D. Cannes Market chief Jerome Paillard tells Screen that most of those 3D films hail from outside the US including such territories as Latin America, Europe and Asia. In total, 4000 films are registered with 2300 finished films and 1700 at project stage or in production. After a drop last year, Paillard thinks overall figures should approach those seen in 2008.

Producers will be out in force with a further 10% over last year for more than 2000 total. About 600 of those will take part in the Producers Network, which provides producers with the opportunity to meet with potential co-production partners via such events as daily breakfasts, speed-meeting rounds and happy hours. Paillard notes that the program has become an integral part of the market given that new financing methods mean it’s fundamental to have an international network that continues to develop.

For the third year in a row, the Market will spotlight the documentary genre during a special brunch (May 18) which will include the participation of Frederick Wiseman, Patricio Guzman, Peter Liechti, Rithy Panh, Stephen Kijak, John Battsek, Catherine Leclef and Peter Jager among others.
