Pretty Pictures takes The Notebook

EXCLUSIVE: Pretty Pictures has pre-bought French rights for Janos Szasz’ Second World War drama Le Grand Cahier (The Notebook), currently in post-production from Beta Cinema.

“When we saw the first few images of The Notebook we just knew that there was something very special going on with Janos Szasz’s new film,” said Pretty Pictures president James Velaise. “We were looking for something Eastern European and it was a wonderful surprise to find it in Hungary.”

The film is an adaptation of Agota Kristof’s international bestseller about two young brothers living with a cruel grandmother in a village on the Hungarian border during the war.

Young twin brothers László and András Gyémánt co-star in the feature Piroska Molnár alongside Ulrich Thomsen and Ulrich Matthes. Oscar-nominated, long-time Michael Haneke collaborator Christian Berger serves as cinematographer on the picture.

Paris-based Pretty Pictures upcoming slate includes Un Certain Regard’s Omar, Dancing in Jaffa and The Look of Love.
