To answer the first reader comment above. Few producers have time to talk directly to exhibitors and run social media campaigns, and its just a tiny proportion of social media impacts that translate into a financial transaction. Releasing films takes time and lots of money and effort. A producer would have to take a very long break from producing films in order to build up an organisation to do all the work involved. Any sensible producer will licence to a distributor who has the infrastructure in place, plus years of experience and contacts which are crucial in maximising returns. Direct or self-distribution is a commercial non-starter and a fantasy of those who don't know any better.
