I think this article is inaccurate, remain or leave there needed (and wasn't) more accuracy in the debate. I'm going to challenge two assertions:
1.' European Union, which is the major trade partner of the UK and which provides millions of pounds in subsidies to the UK market as well as a number of frameworks for coproduction.' - most co pro deals are struck outside the EU framework, the subsidies are generally available for shooting in the territory in which the production spend takes place, to which I would add the biggest factor in Europeans shooting in UK is the Sterling price.
2. 'Most US distributors operate their European head offices out of London, and British film companies benefit from EU support for film. The UK leaving the EU would be a significant backward step for British and European cinema.”
- There are two points here. US distributors have offices for the reason the UK is a market, and provides tax incentives for US productions to shoot in the UK, not because of access to the single market. The other point that British Film companies benefit from EU support needs explaining - in what context? subsidy? market? I'm not aware of any direct funding from the EU to UK productions shooting in the UK but am happy to be corrected.
