Superbowl weekend is never ahealthy one for the theatrical box office, and this weekend was no different, with two new openers faring poorly and the box office the lowest in about threemonths.

Columbia Pictures' BlackHawk Down produced by Revolution Studioscontinued at the top with an estimated $11.5m over the three days, andSunday's figures scaled down due to the stay-at-home to watch the bigmatch on television. Disney's Snow Dogs continued in second place for the third consecutiveweekend with $9.9m.

The only openers -Screen Gems' Slackers andMiramax's Birthday Girl- were disappointing. Slackers, taken over from the defunct DestinationFilms by Screen Gems, came in at number ten (tied with Orange County) with $3m, while Birthday Girl failed to make theten, with $2.5m for the number 12 slot. Slackers stars Devon Sawa, Jason Schwartzmann and James King, while Birthday Girl which playedin the Venice, Toronto and Sundance film festivals, stars Nicole Kidman and BenChaplin.

Meanwhile Buena Vista/Spyglass'The Count Of Monte Cristo andWarner Bros/Pandora's A Walk To Remember both continued to do strong business, taking $9m and$8.8m respectively.

Universal's ABeautiful Mind crossed the $100mmark, with an $8.5m gross taking it to a total so far of $104.6m. The Oscarfavourite looks set to perform strongly throughout awards season as does NewLine's The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring which took another $6.6m to bring its total to amighty $267.2m.

Despite being a three-monthlow, the box office was up on the same weekend last year, and next weekendpromises renewed business as three big pictures are released: WarnerBros/Bel-Air Entertainment's delayed terrorist actioner CollateralDamage starring ArnoldSchwarzenegger, MGM's long-delayed remake of Rollerball directed by John McTiernan and Universal'smuch-hyped family comedy Big Fat Liar starring Frankie Muniz of TV's Malcolm In The Middle.
