Eros reports record Bollywood box office of $35m worldwide from first five days for Shah-Rukh Khan sci-fi

Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One has set a new record at the Indian box office after grossing $35m worldwide since its release last Wednesday [26 October], according to distributor Eros International.

The anticipated Diwali release took a resounding $28.2 million (net collection of $19.7 million) in India and $6.8 million overseas, both new records for an Indian film.

The film opened across more than 4,000 screens worldwide (3,100 plus screens in India and 904 prints internationally, including Tamil and Telugu).

The big budget action-sci fi, which has profited from a huge marketing drive, is a Red Chillies Entertainments film in association with Winford Productions, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring writer-producer Shah Rukh Khan.

Nandu Ahuja, Sr. VP, Distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said: “The film continues to be on its record-breaking spree with several new achievements since its release. It has touched the highest individual collection in circuits such as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan.  We see repeat viewings of the movie with the 3-D version being equally sought after. With the Eid holiday also coming up next week and no other major film release; we are anticipating the film to continue doing huge numbers”.

First quarter 2012 releases include South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Palestine, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Greece.
