Clearly not content with her double-whammy at the Italian box office last weekend, Penelope Cruz achieved the same feat in Bulgaria, albeit with a different headliner.

Fanfan La Tulipe, which opened last year's Cannes Film Festival, launched into the top spot for distributor Van Kris on five screens. Gerard Krawczyk's remake stars Cruz alongside Vincent Perez as the eponymous Fanfan who is tricked into joining the army of Louis XV.

In second place was fellow opener Gothika, actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz's English-language directorial debut which stars Halle Berry as a psychiatrist who finds herself a patient in the asylum she used to work in with no memory of committing any crime. Robert Downey Jr, Charles S. Dutton, Bernard Hill and Cruz co-star in the film which is distributed in Bulgaria by Alexandra Group.

Nearly 10,000 Bulgarians went to the pair of films over the weekend.
