Spain's Grupo Prisa-backed digital satellite TV platform Canal Satelite Digital (CSD) has reported that it has reached the 900,000 mark in subscribers. The platform has reported a steady growth of about 100,000 new subscribers every six months since June of 1998.

CSD launched a little over three years ago in January 1997. It was the first multi-channel digital pay operator in Spain but was followed nine months later by rival Via Digital. Backed by heavyweight Telefonica Media, Via Digital reported on March 30 that it had reached a half million subscribers, a figure which reflected a 70.5% rate of growth over the previous 12 months.

The Spanish pay TV landscape is rapidly transforming, with the recent launch of DTT operator Quiero TV and two new free-to-air DTT licenses to be awarded by the government before November.
