This year's Directors Fortnight will open at Cannes with Anton Corbijn's Control, a biopic of late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. The closing film is also a first film, Mutum, from Brazilian director Sandra Kogut.

In total 23 films round out the main selection with nine first time features which are also eligible for the Camera d'Or prize. The selection is heavy on French films whereas other sections appear to favour foreigners: the official competition boasts a bevy of American directors while Critics Week has a decidedly Latin flare this year.

Among the familiar names, actress Sandrine Bonnaire makes her directorial debut with Elle S'Appelle Sabine, a documentary about her autistic sister, while Chantal Akerman, Wang Bing and Apichatpong Weerasethakul all contributed to the collective work O Estado Do Mundo.

After his critical success Man Push Cart, Ramin Bahrani makes a first trip to Cannes with Chop Shop, a coming-of-age story set in a Queens garage, and Danielle Arbid returns to the Fortnight after 2004's In The Battlefields with A Lost Man.

Along with Bahrani, the American directors to make the cut are Robinson Devor with Zoo about the sexually deviant behavior that led to a Seattle man's death, Tom Kalin's Savage Grace with Julianne Moore, and Gregg Araki with Smiley Face starring Anna Faris, John Krasinski, Adam Brody and Danny Masterson.

William Friedkin's 1980 film Cruising, starring Al Pacino as a cop who goes undercover in New York's gay scene, will have a special screening.
