The first film from Mendez Esparza follows a Mexican man who, having spent many years in the US, returns to his wife and daughters and the mountain village in Mexico where he was born. Pedro De Los Santos, who appeared in Esparza’s short Una Y Otra Vez, takes the lead role here, with Teresa Ramirez Aguirre also starring.

The feature debut of celebrated UK theatre director Norris, Broken follows an 11-year-old girl whose life changes when she witnesses a violent attack on a boy accused of rape. Based on the book by Daniel Clay, the film features a rich ensemble cast led by Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy, Robert Emms, Rory Kinnear and Zana Marjanovic.

Valentina Cervi is the lead, de Lencquesaing the writer, with Marthe Keller, Xavier Beauvois and Denis Podalydes in the cast.

Five teenagers escape from a detention centre at the start of Fadel’s first full-length feature, which follows their journey as they fight, make love and hunt for food and drugs. Fadel also wrote Pablo Trapero’s White Elephant in Un Certain Regard.

Sofia’s Last Ambulance (Ger-Bul-Cro)

Metev, a graduate of the UK’s National Film and Television School, follows a chain-smoking ambulance worker in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, a city where 13 ambulances struggle to serve the entire population. Sinisa Juricic produces the documentary, which was pitched in the IDFA Forum.

Winocour’s short Kitchen screened at Cannes in 2005 and she returns with a Paris-set period drama about a young patient who becomes the favourite of a professor who practises hypnosis on her. Vincent Lindon, Soko, Chiara Mastroianni and Olivier Rabourdin star. ARP Selection distributes in France.
