Spanish production outfit Cartel has announced plans to produce a film about Joaquin Jose Martinez, the Spaniard currently on death row in the United States accused of double murder.

Writers Mercedes Segovia and Julia Montejo are now putting the final touches on the script. Cartel, headed by Eduardo Campoy, secured exclusive rights to the life story of Martinez, who maintains his innocence and is awaiting a retrial in May.

Cartel is also currently developing romantic comedy What's This Thing Called Love About' (De Que Va Eso Del Amor') for writer-directors Yolanda Garcia Serrano and Veronica Fernandez, and recently wrapped the Joaquin Oristrell comedy Without Shame (Sin Vergüenza).

Next up for Cartel is Penelope Cruz-starrer No News From God (Sin Noticias De Dios), a co-production with Flamenco Films and Tornasol Films.
