Fortissimo Films has acquired sale worldwide rights, excluding North America, to documentary Jean-Micheal Basquiat: The Radiant Child, directed by Tamra Davis.

The film, produced by Arthouse Films, will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival where it has been selected to screen in the US documentary competition.

Featuring a rare interview of the artist with Davies given shortly before his death in 1988 and the contributions from Julian Schnabel and Larry Gagosian, the documentary looks at the life of the conflicted artist and non-conformist icon.

The deal was brokered by Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner and Winnie Lau, Fortissimo senior vice president sales and acquisitions, with producer David Koh of Arthouse Films.

Davis has previously directed eight feature films including Billy Madison, with Adam Sandler, and Half Beaked, and more recently episodes of TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty.

“We are extremely excited by this acquisition,” said Lau. “Tamra’s love and knowledge of Basquiat is second to none and this shines through in a wonderful piece of work which will undoubtedly enthral audiences worldwide.”

David Koh commented: “We are excited and honoured to work with Fortissimo Films on presenting our very personal film to audiences worldwide.”
