Freestyle Digital Media and social entertainment company Milyoni are teaming up to give Australian hit Tomorrow, When the War Began a simultaneous US theatrical, VOD and Facebook release on Feb 24.

Freestyle Digital, a new off-shoot of theatrical distributor Freestyle Releasing, says the film will become the first new US theatrical release to also be made available for rental on Facebook. Using Milyoni’s social cinema technology, Facebook’s 800m-plus users will be able to chat about the film, share clips and access exclusive content.

Acquired by Freestyle Digital from producer Omnilab Media, the film will open theatrically in ten US cities. Freestyle is working on the marketing and distribution with Peter Graves’ Cinmarket.

The action thriller was written and directed by Stuart Beattie and stars Caitlin Stasey, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Lincoln Lewis in the story of eight high school friends whose lives are suddenly and violently upended.

Freestyle Digital EVP Steve Harnsberger said: “We are pleased to partner with Milyoni and engage the Facebook community with this number one hit film from Australia. With Facebook’s 800m users sharing video with friends, there is zero doubt that going forward, quality independent film will thrive through effective market campaigns on Facebook.”

“Helping entertainment companies bring a shared viewing experience directly to fans worldwide is what Milyoni is all about,” added Milyoni CEO John Corpus. “Social media has redefined the way content is consumed and shared today and savvy companies like Freestyle recognise the importance of giving fans easy access to movies in any platform - whether it’s on Facebook, on TV or in theatres.”
