EXCLUSIVE: The film, produced and financed by CinemaNX, is currently breaking box office records in the UK.

Icon Australia has picked up theatrical distribution rights for Australia and New Zealand to CinemaNX’s motorcycle documentary TT3D: Closer To The Edge, with plans for an October release.

Icon bought the film ahead of Cannes, where CInemaNX is launching international sales on the project.

The Jared Leto narrated documentary about the Isle of Man’s world famous TT motorcycle race has already taken $1.3m (£825,000) after four weeks release in the UK, with the number of UK screens increasing from 40 to 130 this weekend.

It is the UK’s highest weekend box office documentary opener since Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, grossing £312,998 over its opening weekend.

Icon Australia’s COO Greg Hughes said of the acquisition: “This exhilarating documentary will offer viewers a thrill laden 3D insight into the sights and sounds of this historic event. Closer to The Edge will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable cinematic experiences of 2011.”

Steve Christian, chairman of CinemaNX, added: “It’s incredible performance in the UK has thrilled us at NX - the fact that we’re expanding in a competitive environment against other 3D titles like Thor and Priest is amazing and shows the strength of the distribution campaign for an independent documentary.”
