Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to the Cannes Director’s Fortnight selection.

Directed by Frank Pavich, the documentary explores legendary cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ambitious yet ultimately doomed pursuit to adapt the science fiction novel Dune.

The mid-1970s film adaptation was set to star Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali, with a musical score by Pink Floyd and renowned art designers of the era such as HR Ginger and Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud.

“Though this is a documentary about a never completed film, it is not a story about failure,” said Pavich. “It’s a story about ambition and how the power of art can effectively change the world.”

Pavich, Stephen Scarlata, and Travis Stevens produced Jodorowsky’s Dune and Donald Rosenfeld served as executive producer.
