Aboriginal actor and theatre director Wayne Blair directed the Australian production, which will screen in official selection on Saturday.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) will distribute the Goalpost Pictures Australia production in the US and holds all international sales rights excluding the UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, France, Canada, Israel, Portugal and airlines.

The Sapphires stars Chris O’Dowd, Aboriginal actress Deborah Mailman, pop singer Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell.

Aboriginal playwright Tony Briggs wrote the screenplay based on true events about a group of four Aboriginal girls who entertained US troops during the Vietnam War. Briggs’ mother and other family members were part of the actual group.

TWC COO David Glasser, Negeen Yazdi and Michal Steinberg negotiated the deal with Tristan Whalley and Rosemary Blight for Goalpost and Christos Michaels and Nicki Parfitt on behalf of Lee and Thompson.
