The feature Zus & Zo, directed by Paula van der Oest, has been chosen as the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the Oscars.

The film is loosely based on the play Three Women by Checkov and depicts the relationship between three sisters and their younger brother. Van der Oest is planning to make an English version of her film.

Zus & Zo was nominated this year at the Dutch Film Festival for three Golden Calves: best actress (Sylvia Poorta), best screenplay (Paula van der Oest) and best actor, for which Jacob Derwig won the prize in Utrecht.

Dutch entries at the Oscars have done well in recent years. The Assault (Fons Rademakers), Antonia's Line (Marleen Gorris) and Character (Mike van Diem) all won the award. However, in the last four years none of the Dutch contenders made it through the final selection.
