E1 Entertainment has shipped 1m DVD units of the vampire love story Twilight for its March 21 release. According to the company, the film is setting records for fastest sell-through at most major retailers. Twilight fans have taken part in late-night parties at locations across Canada, queuing to be among the first to purchase the DVD.

'Based on the high level of pre-sales we knew the interest was high to own a piece of the Twilight franchise but even our optimistic projections have been surpassed,' said David Reckziegel, co-president of E1 Entertainment Canada in a statement.

Based on the first novel in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga, a best-selling series of books, Twilight grossed more than C$20m at the Canadian box office. Jim Fotheringham, vice president and general manager of E1 Entertainment Canada's home video division predicted: 'This is only the beginning of what promises to be a great success story.'

E1 will release New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, on November 20, 2009.
