The film tells the story of a young soldier returning from service with NATO troops in Afghanistan. He is welcomed as a hero by his family and given a medal by the army, but he is unable to leave his experiences in Afghanistan behind him.
A Hero's Welcome is a collaboration between writer Johanna Stuttmann, who was inspired by the life-changing experiences of one of her friends, and director Brigitte Maria Bertele. The resulting screenplay won the Baden-Württemberg MFG best screenplay prize in 2007.
EastWest Filmdistribution director Steve Walsh described the film as having 'enormous relevance' for international audiences and said the film received a standing ovation from a packed house at the Berlinale Forum.
A Hero's Welcome will see two market screenings in Cannes at the Marche du Film.
