Firaaq, directed by award-winning Indian actress Nandita Das, scooped best film and best screenplay at the Asian Festival of 1stFilms (AFFF) in Singapore on Wednesday night (Dec 10).

The film, which looks at the impact of the 2002 riots in Gujarat on ordinary people, also took the Foreign Correspondents Association Purple Orchid Award for Best Film.

First-time actor Bosco Francis took the best actor award for Singaporean director Eric Khoo's My Magic which premieredearlier this yearin competition at Cannes. Best director went to Dante Nico Garcia from the Philippines for love story Ploning.

The jury for this year's festival included Hong Kong director Yim Ho, Tikoy Aguiluz who founded the Philippines' Cinemanila film festival and Australian director Nadia Tass.

Organised by Teamwork Productions, AFFF is held as part of the Asia Media Festival hosted by Singapore's Media Development Authority.
