The French Critics union has awarded Alain Resnais' Private Fears In Public Places with its top honor for 2006. The awards were announced Monday night in Paris where Pedro Almodovar's Volver took the best foreign film prize.

Fears is nominated for eight Cesar Awards, the French film industry's top prizes, which will be handed out this weekend. Volver is also up in the same category on Cesar night.

For best first French film, actor turned director Jean-Pierre Darroussin's Le Pressentiment prevailed.
