Ridley Scott's Gladiator and Steven Soderbergh's Traffic landed five nominations each as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nods for the 58th annual Golden Globes.

Paramount's re-release of Curtis Hanson's Wonder Boys seems to have paid dividends: the film received four nominations including a best actor nod for Michael Douglas. Also with four nominations were Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous, Lasse Hallstrom's Chocolat and Stephen Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich.

Soderbergh was nominated as best director for both Erin Brockovich and Traffic.

Two non-US productions were among the titles nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama. Stephen Daldry's UK title Billy Elliot and Istvan Szabo's Sunshine, an Austria-Canada-Germany-Hungary co-production, joined Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Gladiator and Wonder Boys.

Nick Park's UK animation Chicken Run was nominated in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category. The picture joined the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou', Chocolat, Almost Famous and Christopher Guest's Best In Show.

In the Best Actress - Drama category, Icelandic pop star Bjork secured a nod for her performance in Dancer In The Dark, joining Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich, Joan Allen for The Contender, Ellen Burstyn for Requiem For A Dream and Laura Linney for You Can Count On Me. Bjork's I've Seen It All, from Dancer In The Dark, was nominated for best original song.

Russell Crowe was amongst the nominees for Best Actor - Drama for his work in Gladiator. Crowe will compete with Javier Bardem, star of Before Night Falls, Geoffrey Rush, nominated for his role in Quills, Tom Hanks, nominated for Cast Away, and Wonder Boys' Michael Douglas

Juliette Binoche and Brenda Blethyn secured nods for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy for their roles in Chocolat and Saving Grace respectively. Tracey Ullman was nominated for Small Time Crooks, joining Sandra Bullock for Miss Congeniality and Renee Zellweger for Nurse Betty.

In the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy, the nominees were Jim Carey for Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, George Clooney for O Brother, Where Art Thou', John Cusack for High Fidelity, Robert De Niro for Meet the Parents and Mel Gibson for What Women Want.

Titles nominated or the Best Foreign Language Film were: from Mexico, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Amores Perros; from Taiwan, Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and Patrice Leconte's The Widow Of St Pierre, from France. Two titles were nominated from Italy: Giuseppe Tornatore's Malena and Marco Tullio Giordana's The Hundred Steps.
