All eyes may have beenturned to family holiday rival TheChronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And TheWardrobe as it became Buena Vista International's (BVI) highest ever launchin the UK but Harry Potter And The GobletOf Fire refused to lay quietly in the background this weekend.

Narnia gave BVI the lead with a $14.1m (£8m) three-dayweekend that proved the distributor's record in the UK. It took $15.6m (£8.9m) including Thursday December8 opening figures.

However, Goblet Of Firetook the opportunity to become the territory's biggest film of the year at thesame time. Despite taking a 55% week-on-week knock thanks to Narnia'sdominance the fourth instalment in the Potterfranchise added $3.76m (£2.14m) over its fourth weekend for a running total of$71.2m (£40.5m).

That total tipped Goblet Of Firepassed 20th Century Fox's Star Wars:Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith, which took$69m (£39.3m), to take the year's lead where it looks assured of remainingthrough the rest of the year.

In third place for the yearis Warner Bros stable-mate Charlie And The Chocolate Factory with $65.6m (£37.4m).
