Fox has issued its classy but not especially thrilling new trailer for the Gillian Flynn adaptation, due out on October 3.

David Fincher’s upcoming slice of darkness stars Ben Affleck as a man whose wife’s disappearance mobilises the townsfolk to conduct a massive town-wide search across the entire town.

He looks influential, handsome, worried. In flashback she looks radiant, beaming away to the accompaniment of Richard Butler’s cover of the Charles Aznavour rom-croon classic, She.

Eh, hang on, they’re having a bit of a bicker… now he looks stressed. Uh-oh, he’s pounding his fist on a desk. So was theirs a happy marriage, really? Read on to the next paragraph.

Screen can reveal non-exclusively that it’s possible theirs was not a happy marriage. This leads to the time-honoured question that even Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Caesar himself, the no-nonsense slayer of definite articles, would struggle to put any more succinctly: did man kill wife?

The other question is, will the thriller shape up to be an awards contender? And will it land a prestigious autumn festival berth? Given that this is a Fincher movie starring the commanding Affleck 2.0 and the fabulous Rosamund Pike, we’re betting that’s a double affirmative.

The cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, David Clennon and Emily Ratajkowski.

Flynn penned the screenplay from her novel and Cean Chaffin, Arnon Milchan, Josh Donen and Reese Witherspoon served as producers.

Hurry up, October 3. We’ll be here.
