Hong Kong's Federation of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong (FMFP) has selected Johnnie To's Exiled as the territory's entry for the best foreign-language film category of next year's Academy Awards.

The Macau-set gunplay drama premiered in competition at the Venice film festival in 2006 and was sold widely by Hong Kong's Media Asia Distribution. Magnolia Pictures, the UK's Optimum and Madman Entertainment in Australia teamed up to acquire all English-language rights to the film which also sold to around 20 other territories.

In addition, Samuel Hadida's Davis Films acquired English-language remake rights to the film.

Produced by Milkyway Image, the film stars a host of To regulars including Anthony Wong, Francis Ng, Nick Cheung, Simon Yam and Lam Ka-tung.

The story follows five gangsters who initially turn their guns turned on each other, but then join forces to complete a series of missions.
