A new Hoyts 10-screen multiplex cinema in Auckland, New Zealand, may house the world's largest 35mm cinema screen.

The $30m Hoyts Sylvia Park, in Auckland's Mt Wellington, will open March 29 with a large 30.67-meters-wide and 13-meters-tall screen. The company has appliced with Guiness World Records to see if the screen is indeed the world's largest.

The gigantic screen requires a projector run by an 8000-watt bulb.

Local film Black Sheep will be the first film shown on the large screen at Thursday's opening.

Exhibition company Hoyts, headquartered in Australia, was founded in the 1920s.
