New 01 Distribution title Caterina Va In Citta was the highest grossing Italian film of the weekend at the local box office, where it beat stiff competition from Ermanno Olmi's highly anticipated pirate epic Singing Behind The Screens.

Paolo Virzi's comedy, about a 13-year-old girl who moves to a big city with her family, opened with a superb $679,864 from 168 screens and a massive screen average of $4,047

Meanwhile, Ermanno Olmi's arthouse movie Singing Behind The Screens scored just $246,219 for Mikado from 87 screens. Coming in ninth, the period picture earned a screen average of $2,830.

Elsewhere, Intolerable Cruelty continued to make a killing, grossing a further $2,242,173 on its second weekend for a massive screen average of $6, 556. This brings its total earnings in Italy to a hugely impressive $6,382,443.

New releases included BVI's Kill Bill Volume 1, which came in second on 303 screens with a gross of $1,498,239 and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which earned $1,025,507 for Eagle Pictures from 283 screens.

The third biggest opener of the weekend was Clint Eastwood's Mystic River, which grossed $854,519 from 157 screens. The Warner Bros crime caper also posted the second highest screen average, at $5,443.
