Baby Reindeer co-star Jessica Gunning has been attached to play Cass Elliot in a feature about the sixties singer-songwriter and TV personality also known as Mama Cass.
Veritas Entertainment, which produced recent Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, has packaged the project, which is currently in development and being shopped to potential buyers and financiers.
The film will be based on My Mama Cass, the memoir by Elliot’s surviving daughter Owen Elliot-Kugell. Novelist and screenwriter Emma Forrest is adapting the book.
Elliot had her first success as part of The Mamas & The Papas, the late sixties vocal group that had hits including Monday, Monday and California Dreamin’, and was a key figure in the Los Angeles music scene of the era.
According to a statement from Veritas, however, the project “is not a traditional Mamas & the Papas biopic” but will focus on Elliot’s life, legacy and mother-daughter relationship.
British actress and writer Gunning won numerous honours for her performance opposite creator and star Richard Gadd in Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer, among them the Bafta and Emmy supporting actor awards. She will next appear in Steven Soderbergh’s Toronto premiere The Christophers, set for North American release in April by Neon.
Veritas, run by partners Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen, is also known for such TV projects as BBC/Starz series Dublin Murders, HBO movie Fahrenheit 451 and Apple TV+ series The Mosquito Coast.
