Anja & Viktor, the feature debut of Danish actor/scriptwriter/director Charlotte Sachs Bostrup has smashed local box office records over its opening weekend taking just short of $1m in its home territory.

The romantic comedy, produced by 'midas-touch' Regner Grasten, opened on Friday August 3, achieving 157,305 admissions from 101 prints and a three-day gross of $990,809 (DKR8.4m).

Anja & Victor thus beat previous opening weekend records held by Disney's The Lion King (124,721 admissions) and Tarzan (102,450 admissions). The $1.5m (DKr13m) Anja & Victor is an independent follow-up to Love At First Hiccough, a box-office hit based on a local bestseller, which racked up more than 500,000 admissions in 1999. In comparison, Hiccough managed just 54,639 admissions over its first weekend.

Producer Grasten's previous hits include popular family-oriented fare like The Crumbs 1-3 as well as dramas The Lost Spring and Just A Girl. Upcoming projects include an adaptation of much sought-after Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf's memories.
