It was family fare versus slasher horror at The Netherlands box office last weekend as BVI's Freaky Friday squared off against RCV's Freddy Vs Jason.

Both big hits in North America each film was able to claim a victory with Friday finishing ahead of Freddy but the horror film performing far better in gross to screen count ratio.

Freddy Vs Jason, which sees the two horror icons Freddy Krueger (from the A Nightmare On Elm Street series) and Jason Voorhees (Friday The 13th series) face each other for the first - but probably not last - time, sliced a $146,251 (Euros 125,776) gross from 40 screens for a blood-curdlingly good $3,656 screen average. Including previews the film has taken $194,097 (Euros 166,923) to date.

The success proves the popularity of the genre in The Netherlands. Freddy Vs Jason's screen average was the third highest of the weekend behind chart leader American Pie: The Wedding and last week's opener Identity. Horror-thriller Identity dropped off just 6% from its launch weekend and has grossed $327,379 (Euros 281,546) from 28 screens after 11 days on release.

Family comedy Freaky Friday, ironically starring former horror scream-queen Jamie Lee Curtis, opened fourth and has taken $155,901 (Euros 134,075) including previews. However, its higher screen count (69) weakened its average in comparison to Freddy.
