‘Under Current’

EXCLUSIVE: Hong Kong action thriller Under Current from acclaimed Infernal Affairs co-director Alan Mak is set to receive a day-and-date release in mainland China, North America, Malaysia and Hong Kong on December 6.

The feature will open on December 6 through Beijing Super Lion Culture Group in mainland China, day-and-date through Chinalion Film Distribution in North America, through Brilliant Pictures in Malaysia and Brunei and through Emperor Motion Pictures in Hong Kong. Clover Films will release the film in Singapore on December 11.

International sales are handled by Emperor Motion Pictures, which also backed the film.

The Hong Kong-set film features a starry cast led by Aaron Kwok and Simon Yam alongside Francis Ng and Alex Fong. Producers are Tin Kai Man and Jason Siu.

Also written by Mak, the story revolves around a barrister and a police officer who are brought together to unravel a money laundering case after the financial director of a reputable charity organisation hangs himself on stage and a large sum of money vanishes.

Emperor Motion Pictures is the Hong Kong studio behind 2024’s The Last Dance, which became the biggest local film of all time in the territory with takings of more than $20.6m (HK$160m) and represents Hong Kong at the upcoming Oscars.

Further backers are Beijing Super Lion Culture Group, Xin Hui Ying Film Culture (Shenzhen) and Huawen Picture.

Mak has previously directed and co-directed a string of acclaimed and commercially successful films, including the Infernal Affairs trilogy, the Overheard trilogy and Initial D.
