‘Crossing a Dawn’

EXCLUSIVE: China’s Parallax Films has secured sales for Crossing A Dawn, which recently premiered in competition at Beijing International Film Festival and is due to open in China on May 22.

It is directed by Zhao Badou, who describes his directing feature debut as Before Sunrise in Beijing. Starring Ma Sichun, Edward Chen and Zhang Yifan, the romantic drama follows a bold designer and a self-proclaimed novelist who cross paths during a single night in Beijing, sparking a playful exploration of love and mischief.

It has been sold to China Lion for North America, Australia and New Zealand, Southern Film (Hong Kong and Macau), Abnormal Studios (Cambodia). The distributors are aiming for an almost date-and-date release with mainland China.

Zhao said: “The film captures the intricate emotions of young urbanites and the complexities of modern love and gender dynamics and presents contemporary romance in a fresh, candid, and witty way”.

Zhao is a literary consultant for Shao Yihui’s Her Story, a female-driven drama that became a sleeper hit at China’s box office.

It is produced by Momo Pictures and has also been picked up by Bofarto for airlines.

Parallax Films’ Cannes slate also includes Lenti Liang’s Our Secrets, a short film in La Cinef competition at the festival.
