Blumhouse has named former studio executive Abhijay Prakash as its new president, overseeing all business aspects of the Jason Blum-headed production company.

Prakash succeeds Charles Layton, who will become vice-chairman of Blumhouse and stay on for two years in a strategic and advisory role.

Prakash was previously president of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, handling the studio’s strategic and long-range planning and overseeing business operations. Before that he was chief operating officer at Focus Features and then DreamWorks Animation.

Blumhouse has five features set for release this year: Firestarter, The Black Phone and Halloween Ends through Universal, Vengeance through Focus Features and DASHCAM through Momentum Pictures. In television the company’s recent projects include NBC’s The Thing About Pam and Netflix documentary Our Father

Commenting on his appointment Prakash said: “From my vantage point at Universal over the years, it was clear that nobody else in the business was as adept at figuring out how to create value from content as the Blumhouse team. I’m thrilled to make the leap to join this entrepreneurial team in helping further build this beloved, global brand, and leveraging the company’s strengths and unique business approach to access all the emerging opportunities in the film and television space.”

Said Jason Blum: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with Abhijay. He’s one of the most astute, forward-thinking business leaders we’ve had the good fortune to partner with, and I’m thrilled that he’s joining Blumhouse and will help lead the company into its next phase of expansion.”
