1-2 Special has acquired all North American rights to Emmanuel Marre’s A Man Of His Time, winner of the best screenplay prize at this year’s Cannes festival.
The New York-based distributor will give the film a theatrical release next year.
A Man Of His Time, which had its world premiere in the Cannes competition, is set in 1940 and follows a character (inspired by Marre’s own great-grandfather) who arrives in Vichy France determined to secure what he believes is his rightful place in the new fascist administration. As the war continues, he tries to save France, and himself, from collapse. Swann Arlaud and Sandrine Blancke star.
The film was produced by Kidam in France and Michigan Films in Belgium, and was co-produced by Les Films Pelléas, Les Films de Pierre, Unité, France 2, Condor, The Ink Connection, RTBF, Be tv, Orange and Proximus. Charades is handling sales.
As well as the best screenplay prize, the film won the Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai and the CST Award for Best Artist-Technician at Cannes. Marre’s first feature, Zero Fucks Given, premiered in the 2021 Cannes Critics’ Week and won the Gan Foundation Award.
Marre commented: “I’m absolutely delighted that the film is being distributed by 1-2 Special. To be part of their carefully curated lineup is a real honour for A Man Of His Time. I can’t wait for the film to reach audiences in the US and to see how they respond to it, to this deeply European story, yet one that resonates in so many ways with our contemporary world.”
