Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer

Principal photography has begun on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Kenneth Branagh has joined the cast of the thriller about the scientist often referred to as the ‘father of the atomic bomb.’

Universal Pictures and Nolan’s Syncopy said the film will shoot on multiple US locations including New Mexico, California and New Jersey and released the first photo of lead Cillian Murphy in character as J Robert Oppenheimer.

The film is being shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film and according to Universal will be the first project ever with sections in IMAX black and white analogue photography.

Branagh, who previously appeared in Nolan’s Tenet and Dunkirk and is currently nominated for three Oscars for his own Belfast, joins an ensemble cast that also includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett and Rami Malek.

Nolan directs from his own script, based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and the late Martin J Sherwin. Emma Thomas of Syncopy is producing with Nolan and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven.

Universal Pictures will distribute worldwide with a North American release set for July 21, 2023.
