Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid will open the 15th edition of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) at Palau de Congressos in Palma on October 28.

Filmmaker and actor Firstman’s feature debut made its world premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes earlier this year before going on to screen at the Toronto, New York and San Sebastian film festivals.

Written and directed by Firstman, the film follows a washed-up party promoter who is forced to turn his life around when an unexpected visitor arrives. Firstman stars alongside Cara Delevingne, Diego Calva, Eldar Isgandarov and newcomer Reggie Absolom.

“Opening the festival with this film consolidates Evolution’s commitment to independent cinema and our unwavering support for diverse filmmakers – and this movie is everything we need. Hilarious. Tender. Wild. Sincere,” said EMIFF founder and festival director Sandra Lipski.

The festival’s closing-night film will be Spanish director Maria Martinez Bayona’s feature debut The End Of It, at Palma’s Teatro Principal on November 4.

Rebecca Hall stars in the drama, which explores ageing, entitlement, creativity and connection. The closing night will also see Mallorcan costume designer Pau Aulí receive the Evolution New Talent Award. Aulí designed the costumes for Bayona’s film.

EMIFF will also showcase a rising generation of filmmakers via an international short film competition strand aiming to “bring together emerging voices and bold new perspectives from around the world”, said Lipski. Among the highlights are short- film directorial debuts from Renee Zellweger, who has made a film called They, a story centred on the importance of being yourself, and actor Michael Keaton, who has directed a futuristic family tale called Sweetwater.
